Hey guys! Hope all is well!
A lot of you ask me what camera I use, so I thought sharing what I use for my blogging and what items I use to do my job, might be of interest? I’m a nosey person and love seeing what people are using so I hope some of you find this interesting!
The obvious things…
I’m actually using my camera less and less recently. The cameras on the iPhone’s are so powerful and so handy for snapping instagram shots, that I’ve been relying on my phone heavily. However, I still use my camera for my blog photos and for my videos. I use the Olympus PEN EPL8. I use either the kit lens that it came with (14mm-42mm) or for product shots or street style pics, I use the 45mm lens which gives that beautiful blurred background.
I had the Olympus PEN ELP7 for 2 years, and I only got the newer model because unfortunately it broke, but otherwise i’d still happily be using the 7. It is such a nifty camera, and is easy for beginners. It took me a while to get used to all the functions and I still don’t use it to its capacity but it’s so great for the cost of it. I think its around £450 for the 8. My 45mm lens was around £175 when I bought it in Jan 2017, I just check on John Lewis and its now £210 (cheaper than Jessops!) The lens is a game changer and I love it.
These photos were all shot with the 45mm lens:
As I mentioned above, I use my phone for a lot of my instagram photos, but I edit all my instagram images on my phone too. I often use lightroom but I just use the free app, I haven’t got the software on my mac because its pretty pricey and I’m not sure if I’ll use it enough, but I think I might take the plunge soon. Apps I use for editing photos are: VSCO and Facetune, sometimes lightroom if I need to colour correct. A really handy app for keen instagrammers is UNUM, it lets you upload photos in to the app and you can plan your feed, move photos around to see what looks best. I can be quite forgetful at times, so I love using this as it reminds me what I need to post in what order!
I’m using a MacBook Pro which I got just over 3 years ago, and it’s working as good as new. I really really hope I haven’t just jinxed myself! I had always used PCs and I hadn’t used much apple software apart from my phone so it was quite a change but I love it now and would never go back to a PC!
Less obvious things…
Living in the UK doesn’t bless us with much lovely natural bright light so when I’m filming my YT videos I use lights. I have a ring light which is amazing for lighting up your face, so really great for make-up videos, but they’re not great for hauls or when you need to light up the room! I have a couple of box lights which I use too, and work really well with the ring light. It isn’t necessary to use lighting but where I usually film my videos, there isn’t a great deal of natural lighting coming in. The ring light was around £70 and the box lights are around £25 each
Imagine taking over 100 photos per outfit… for the last 4 years. That’s a lot of photos! Which takes up A LOT of room on your laptop. I’ve moved all of my traveling photos to my hard drive now, but the cloud is actually amazing and I use this everyday rather than my hard drive now. I optimise the photos so only a low resolution version is stored on my phone and laptop which free’s up a lot of space. For SO long, I’d have that annoying message pop up, not letting me take another photo because my storage was full. I had a huge clearout of photos and then updated my storage so I never have that problem again!
You can never have enough! I always find a couple floating around my handbag, one in my laptop bag and one in my camera bag. I’ve gone out before with my camera, but no memory card. It’s the most annoying thing ever, so I always like to have a couple on me *just in case*
Oh the days of me and my tripod. I used to spend my whole Sunday, driving around with my tripod, scouting out quiet locations where I could pop it up, use my car as a changing room and shoot! I still use it now for some pics at home, hotel rooms and for my videos. They’re so so handy!
…and I think that’s it! These are things I have built up over time, so if you are thinking you need to go and buy all this stuff, you really don’t! You can actually blog from your phone, so really all you need is your phone and your creativity to create your content!
