I guess life is about making decisions and taking risks… and at the end of last year, I made quite a big decision, actually a really big decision.
I quit my job and decided to do blogging full time.
I started my blog 4 years ago, recently I’ve been looking back at some of my very first photos, and I used to take my blog photos in my parents garden, either on the patio or by the fence! I’d either go for the tripod and timer method, or bribe my mum or dad in to taking them! It’s good to see where you started and where you are now, everyone has to start somewhere! If you look through my archives, those posts are still on here!
For a couple of years, I posted every Sunday, and there were a few Sundays where I didn’t post, and I hated when I couldn’t put a post out! Then when I went travelling, I didn’t really post on my blog. It wasn’t until I returned from travelling in August 2016 that I took it more seriously and tried to put a lot more time in to it. I genuinely loved doing it and wasn’t in it to make money, I didn’t even know that you could.
Then a few months on, in late 2016/early 2017 I had a few emails offering paid projects, it was only a really small amount, and I also found a platform called Takumi which is an app where you can take on jobs to promote products on instagram and then you’d be paid for it. I really was like OMG I’m making money from something I really love doing! How is this even possible? If a company emailed me, I’d never ask for payment, I’d always just promote their clothes/beauty items in exchange for the clothes/products etc. It was only until mid 2017 where I felt comfortable to ask if the brand had any budget for the collaboration they wanted to do, because at this point I was paying for photographers as I wanted my photos to be the highest quality they could be, so I basically just wanted the cost of my expenses covered.
The more time and effort I was putting in to my photos and posts, I thought I deserved something in return for it. If a brand wanted some new imagery, they’d need to pay for a photographer, a model, hair and make-up, a stylist and probably more, let alone then the advertising costs to get that in front of say 20k people. A blogger basically does all of that for them, sometimes just for a free t-shirt which probably cost a brand under £10. It was this point, I felt more confident and comfortable to charge a small fee for my time, which I thought was totally fair.
This grew and grew and I was being paid for more work. This is when I literally put blood, sweat and tears in to my content and just wanted to do as much as I could. It went on like this for a few months, I was keeping track of everything and I said to myself, as soon as I make enough money from blogging to cover all of my outgoings for a few months consecutively, and a little bit more, I’m going to focus on it fully. Luckily that happened, and I thought I really don’t want to miss my time to hopefully take my blog to the next stage. So I handed my notice in and left my job just before Christmas.
As I said, I’ve been doing this for 4 years, and I had seen others doing it for 6 months and then going full time, and I did feel disheartened, I thought, how are they doing it? Why can’t I do it? How have they done it so quick? But I finally feel like I’ve got to a point where I can do it. If Im going to do this, I have to believe in myself and believe that I can do it.
So now, scarily, this is my full time job! I’ve never really stuck to anything before, I am proud of myself for sticking to this over the last 4 years and making my dream a reality.
Now I have more time to focus on this fully, I’m going to be doing more YouTube videos too. If there are any blog posts, instagram posts, YouTube videos, you’d like to see, then please just message me and let me know!
I’m so excited to start this year! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it 100 times more. Thank you! Thank you for reading my blog, thank you for liking my photos, thank you for your kind comments, thank you for supporting me. And another thank you to those who voted for me for the UK 2018 blog awards, I’ve been shortlisted in the Fashion and Beauty category which I’m so so shocked and happy about!
Sending lots of love
