The gym. Oh those 2 words, they either bring a lot of happiness to some people, or the complete opposite, a big sigh and eye roll when they hear ‘the gym’. I’m actually in the middle, before I go, I’m the eye roller, trying to work out if I have actually eaten fairly healthy that day which would exempt me from going, but then once I’ve been, I come out thinking the gym is the best thing in the world! Well not quite the best, but it makes you feel good doesn’t it.

I really struggle to find the motivation to go and also the confidence too. The gym is almost as scary as walking in to a night club on your own. People have their workout buddies, their new gym gear, their PT’s, everyone seems ‘sorted’ and knowing what they are doing. For workout newbs like me, I go on my own and I’m not really sure what I should be doing.

To combat this, I’ve been doing 3 things which have actually been helping with motivation and confidence in the gym!

1. GYM CLOTHES

This may sound vein or silly, but if you feel confident, happy and comfortable in what you’re wearing, that’s one step to feeling more confident in the gym! I had these really old gym clothes and the legging length was not flattering on my legs. So I’ve got a new gym outfit which I really like and I think it flattering and is super comfy!

2. PREPARATION

Before I go to the gym, I watch YouTube videos and get some workout inspo! I write it down and take my piece of paper with me! You could write notes on your phone but I like to have it properly written down! It gives you an idea of what to do and then you know what you are going to do in the gym. Some of my favourite channels are Carly Rowena, Em Sheldon and The Lean Machines. There are a tonne of exercise channels which you can get full workouts from! You can even do some at home.

3. PLANNING

I always like to plan my week ahead, so I know where I’m going to be, when I’m seeing friends and family, and then I actually plan my gym time. If I’m totally honest, I don’t always stick to this but if you are doing a class and know what time it is on, work around that. Maybe meet friends after/before but I do try and plan around when I want to work out. If you’re just rushing around like a headless chicken, it is unlikely that you’ll go! I also leave my gym kit (once I’ve washed it!) in the car, so it is always there! Be organised!

I started getting into going to the gym this year and I definitely agree with you on the clothes point! I’ve just treated myself to a couple of new pieces to help me feel more confident!

I’ve also found going to classes has really helped as you have the guidance from an instructor and learn lots of new moves which you can then try out!

Hey Jess! Yes absolutely!!! I love the classes, they’re so much more motivating rather than working out alone! xx

These are great points – I’m the sort of terrible person who goes to the gym 6 times a week because i LOVE it, but I completely agree that it can be intimidating sometimes (there are still parts of the gym I fear to tread!). Feeling confident in what you are wearing is really important, and there’s no gym motivation quite like a new pair of trainers 🙂
