The less glamorous side to blogging
There are lots of glamorous and sassy parts of blogging which every blogger will share, but we don’t really share the less glamorous side so I don’t think a lot of people understand what really happens behind the scenes, so I’m going to let you in! I’m just going to say that I work full time and run my blog in the evenings/weekends so the full time bloggers must do SO much more! But here’s a little glimpse of the not so sassy parts of my part time blogging…..
Oh the admin! I honestly feel like the majority of my time I spend on my blog is admin. Going back and forth on emails, invoices, finances, and trying to know what I’m doing with technical stuff! Editing images, does that fall under admin?!
This kind of ties in with the admin. There is so much planning! Planning outfits, I know it sounds silly but I find this quite stressful. I shoot in bulk so I like to have 3-4 full outfits to shoot, trying to get these perfect gets me a little stressed! Then you need to plan someone to shoot for you, I use a photographer so usually need to book this a couple of weeks in advance. Travel – how are you getting there? Packing it all up, weather, timings, make up touch ups, it’s kind of like a mini photo shoot you’re trying to organise! Then the events, I struggle to go to these as I work full time and I wouldn’t make it in to central London in time for the evening events, but if I do go, again, more planning!
I recently shot and it was snowing. IT WAS SNOWING. I had a little tent to change in outside and my fingers and toes were so numb that I was really struggling to change my jeans! Also, I had to lug a big suitcase with all of my outfits in to and around London to shoot them. I’m always carrying loads of bags around but this was on another level. Snow and a big suitcase on a busy tube is not ideal. For flat lays, I need good daylight for this so these can’t be done in the evenings and while the weather is so dull, it is hard to get nice bright light so this takes some planning too!
I like to try and talk about lots of different topics, its not always easy to just pluck a relevant idea out of thin air! If I think of something at a random time, I like to write it in my notes and be able to come back to it. But sometimes the ideas do run out! My brain doesn’t shut down, I’m always trying to think of the next interesting thing to write about!
The actual blog post
It isn’t just take some pictures quick, think of something to write. Once I’ve got the images, I like to look at them and see if any of my content ideas fit in with the outfit. Then the post needs to be written, the backlinks, the SEO, the readability, the meta descriptions, the alt tags, the formatting, the scheduling……. There is a lot more work that goes in to a blog post than meets the eye!
Always remembering to upload or scheduling in posts, editing posts, trying to have some kind of theme and making sure the photos run in a aesthetically pleasing order. I fail pretty badly at this, I don’t really have a theme as such, I just try and make it look ‘pretty’ and flow evenly!
This is just me doing it at the weekend, and some evenings! I don’t really have a day off because I have my Mon-Fri, then weekends are shooting, writing, updating, emails etc etc, BUT I absolutely LOVE it, and wouldn’t change it at all!
Just a quick mention to this watch! It’s from a gorgeous brand called Henry watches, and they’re a London based brand! I feel so lost without a watch and this one fits in perfectly with my silver jewellery collection!
